Amsterdam doesn't have an off-putting season so much as a wide range of comfortable-to-cold, with two specific events — King's Day and tulip season — worth building a trip around if either interests you.
Mid-March to mid-May: tulip season
Temperatures climb steadily from a cool 9°C in March to a pleasant 16-17°C (low-to-mid 60s°F) by May, with showery conditions common throughout. This window lines up with the Netherlands' famous tulip season, and the Keukenhof gardens — one of the world's largest flower gardens — open exclusively during this period, with peak bloom typically falling mid-to-late April. King's Day, the country's biggest annual celebration, falls on April 27 each year, filling the canals with boats and the streets with orange-clad crowds — book well ahead if your dates overlap.
Late May to August: warmest and longest days
Summer brings the warmest temperatures of the year (18-23°C / mid-60s to low-70s°F) and up to sixteen and a half hours of daylight around the June solstice, making for long, easy evenings along the canals. It's also peak tourist season, so expect the fullest hotels and highest prices of the year. Amsterdam Pride, with its well-known Canal Parade, typically falls on the first Saturday of August and draws large crowds of its own.
September: the quiet sweet spot
September still holds onto mild temperatures (17-18°C / low-to-mid 60s°F) while crowds and prices both ease off from the summer peak — multiple Amsterdam-focused guides single this month out as offering the best overall balance of comfortable weather, lengthening evenings, and manageable tourist numbers.
October to February: cooler, greyer, and cheapest
Temperatures drop steadily through autumn into winter, bottoming out around 3-7°C (high 30s to mid-40s°F) in December and January, with short days — as little as eight or nine hours of daylight, and dusk by around 4:30pm in December. This is also when hotel rates are lowest and crowds thinnest. Amsterdam's Light Festival, with illuminated artworks installed along the canals, runs from late November through January and gives the darkest months their own distinct appeal.
Practical notes
- King's Day (April 27) is worth planning around either way — book well ahead to join it, or avoid that date if you'd rather skip the crowds
- Keukenhof only opens during tulip season (roughly mid-March to mid-May) — check the specific year's opening and closing dates before building a trip around it
- Rain is possible in every month, even summer — a compact umbrella or light rain jacket is worth packing year-round
- A bike is the way most locals get around — renting one is easy and often the fastest way to see the city, but keep to designated bike lanes as a visitor
