Sardinia's fares are shaped heavily by which of its three airports you fly into, on top of the usual summer-peak pattern — getting the airport choice right can matter as much as the travel dates.
The cheapest months to fly
November through March generally offers the lowest fares into Cagliari, the one airport with reliable year-round service. Shoulder months — May, June, and September — balance decent prices with much better weather and route availability than deep winter.
How far ahead to book
2 to 3 months ahead usually secures a good fare outside summer. If you're flying into Olbia or Alghero for a July or August trip, book 4-6 months out — both airports rely heavily on seasonal budget-airline routes that fill up and get pricier as summer approaches.
Watch out for these price spikes
- Late July through August, especially the week around Ferragosto (August 15) — Sardinia's single busiest and most expensive travel week of the year
- Olbia and Alghero specifically see steep price and frequency shifts between summer and winter, since many of their routes are seasonal-only
- Italian and broader European school summer holidays generally, which run through most of the June–August window
Pick the right airport first
Cagliari (CAG) in the south has the most consistent year-round service and the widest range of connections, making it the safer choice for off-season travel or if your plans are anywhere near the capital. Olbia (OLB) in the northeast serves the Costa Smeralda and gets strong direct connections from across Europe, but mainly in peak season — outside summer, expect to connect via Rome or Milan. Alghero (AHO) in the northwest has the most limited routes of the three, even at peak season. Match the airport to where you're actually staying before comparing fares, since a cheap flight into the wrong end of the island can cost more in transfer time and car rental than it saves.

Fly into Cagliari for the best year-round value and reliability. If Olbia or Alghero suit your itinerary better, book summer travel there well ahead — their routes are seasonal and both availability and price tighten up fast as peak season approaches.
