The cheapest months to fly
February to April and August to September are generally the best value, sitting between the summer holiday peak and the shoulder-season events that follow. These months avoid both the Christmas–New Year surge and the main school holiday blocks.
How far ahead to book
3 to 5 months ahead is a reasonable window for most long-haul routes into Sydney. If your trip falls around Christmas–New Year, Vivid Sydney, or Easter, push that out to 6-8 months — these are Sydney's clearest, most predictable demand spikes.
Watch out for these price spikes
- Mid-December through late January — Australian summer holidays, plus Christmas and New Year's Eve, Sydney Harbour's single busiest and most photographed night of the year
- Australia Day, January 26, and the long weekend around it
- Vivid Sydney, 22 May – 13 June 2026 — a major festival that fills hotels and pushes up fares for its full three-week run
- Easter and the two-week school holiday block around it
A note on entry requirements
Most visa-exempt visitors need an Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) or eVisitor visa arranged before departure — apply directly through the Australian government's official app or website rather than third-party sites that charge markups for the same free or low-cost service.
