Vatican City has no airport of its own — every trip here means flying into Rome first. That makes this less about Vatican-specific timing and more about when Rome flights are cheapest, since the two are effectively the same booking decision.
The cheapest months to fly
Late October through March, outside the Christmas and New Year stretch, tends to bring the lowest fares into Rome, as tourist demand drops off after the summer season. April, May, and September offer a solid middle ground — noticeably cheaper than peak summer while still giving you comfortable sightseeing weather for a full day at the Vatican. June through August are the most expensive months, driven by both European holiday travel and the Jubilee-style crowds the Vatican regularly draws.
How far ahead to book
2 to 4 months ahead works well for most of the year. If you're flying in around Christmas, Easter, or the last Sunday of any month (when the Vatican Museums offer free entry and draw much bigger crowds), book earlier — 4 to 6 months out — since both flights and Rome hotels tighten up fast around these dates.
A routing tip worth knowing
Rome has two airports — Fiumicino (FCO), the main international hub, and Ciampino (CIA), used mostly by budget carriers on European routes. It's worth comparing fares into both, since Ciampino often has cheaper short-haul options, though Fiumicino has better long-haul connections and a more direct transfer into central Rome.

- Easter week, which shifts yearly — one of the single busiest and most expensive stretches to fly into Rome, tied directly to Vatican events
