December to February: the sweet spot
This is the driest, coolest, and most comfortable stretch of the year, with lower humidity and minimal rainfall. It's also the most popular time to visit, which pushes up hotel prices and crowds at major sights like the War Remnants Museum and Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica. If comfort is the priority, this window is worth booking ahead for.
March to April: still good, hotter
The dry season technically extends through April, but heat builds noticeably as the months go on — April is typically the hottest month of the year, with intense midday sun. Mornings and evenings are still very manageable; it's the middle of the day that gets genuinely tough.
May to November: the rainy season
Rain typically falls as short, intense afternoon downpours rather than all-day gray skies, often followed quickly by clear skies again. September tends to be the wettest month, with the highest chance of afternoon flooding in low-lying areas. The upside of this stretch: noticeably fewer tourists, cheaper hotels, and easier restaurant reservations.
Tet (Lunar New Year)
Tet usually falls in late January or February and is Vietnam's most important holiday nationwide, including in the south. Many local shops and some restaurants close for several days, and both flights and hotels get significantly more expensive and harder to book. Check the exact dates for your travel year, since they shift on the lunar calendar — and either plan carefully around them or block time out entirely if you want a fully operational city.
