Okinawa mixes marine life, wartime and royal history, and some of the clearest water in Japan — a genuinely different pace from mainland cities like Tokyo or Osaka.
1. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
One of the largest aquariums in the world, best known for its huge Kuroshio Tank housing whale sharks and manta rays. Hours shift seasonally, so check the current schedule before you go — arriving right at opening or in the final two hours before closing is the best way to see the main tank without tour-group crowds bunched in front of the glass.
2. Shuri Castle
The former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom has been under reconstruction since a 2019 fire, and as of now most of the surrounding park is open while the main hall itself remains closed for final work — it's scheduled to reopen on November 23, 2026, with timed-entry tickets required once it does. In the meantime, a dedicated viewing deck lets visitors watch the traditional rebuilding techniques up close, which is its own kind of attraction. Check the current status before visiting, since the reopening date has shifted before.
3. Kokusai-dori
Naha's main shopping street, lined with souvenir shops, local food stalls, and izakayas. It's free to wander and one of the easiest ways to get a feel for Okinawan food and craft culture without booking anything in advance.
4. Cape Manzamo
A dramatic clifftop formation on the island's western coast, shaped a little like an elephant's trunk, with sweeping ocean views. It's free to visit and makes a good sunset stop if you're driving the west coast.
5. Kerama Islands day trip
A short ferry ride from Naha gets you to some of the clearest water in Japan, with snorkeling and diving conditions that rival much more remote tropical destinations. Day-trip boat tours run regularly in season and are worth booking a few days ahead in peak summer.
Worth knowing
Typhoon season (roughly June–October) can disrupt ferries to the Kerama Islands and outdoor plans generally, so build a flexible day or two into longer itineraries. Shuri Castle's reopening timeline is worth double-checking close to your travel dates, since restoration projects like this can shift.
