Prague rewards travelers who think in three tiers rather than a single "best month" — summer for long days and festivals, December for the Christmas markets, and the shoulder seasons for the best balance of weather, crowds, and price.
June to August: peak season, for good reason
Prague Castle draws over 10,000 visitors daily in summer, Charles Bridge becomes genuinely shoulder-to-shoulder from mid-morning to early evening, and Old Town Square requires patience to navigate. It's also when the weather is warmest and most reliable, festivals fill the calendar, and beer garden culture is in full swing with long daylight hours. Book accommodation and any major attraction tickets well ahead if you're set on these months.
Late November to early January: the Christmas markets
Prague's Christmas markets run daily at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, typically from late November through the first week of January. It's one of the most atmospheric times to visit — mulled wine, a towering lit Christmas tree, candlelit church concerts — but also genuinely cold, with December nights regularly dropping below freezing. Weekday mornings and the days right after Christmas (December 27 onward) offer a noticeably quieter market experience than weekend evenings or the week before Christmas.
April–May and September–October: the shoulder seasons
These are widely considered Prague's best-value windows — comfortable temperatures, meaningfully thinner crowds than summer, and generally lower accommodation prices. Easter week is an exception, bringing a temporary crowd surge close to summer levels at major sights, so book ahead if your spring trip overlaps with it.
November (outside the Christmas markets): the budget play
Early-to-mid November, before the Christmas markets open, tends to bring some of the lowest accommodation prices of the year alongside near-empty major sights. It's cold and the days are short, but if budget and solitude matter more than festive atmosphere, it's worth genuine consideration.
Practical notes
- Pack warm layers for December — average highs sit around 3°C (37°F), with cold snaps well below freezing
- Book Christmas market accommodation and any Easter week trip well in advance — both compress into short, high-demand windows
- Comfortable walking shoes matter regardless of season — Prague's old town is best explored on foot over cobblestones
- Check the specific year's Easter dates before booking a spring trip, since the surge follows the holiday, not a fixed calendar date
The short version
April–May or September–October offer the best all-round balance. Go in summer if festivals and long days matter most to you and you don't mind the crowds. Go in December specifically for the Christmas markets, dressed warmly. Early November is the quiet, budget-friendly outlier worth considering if solitude beats atmosphere.
