Rio sits in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons run opposite to Europe and North America — summer falls in the northern winter months, which surprises a fair number of first-time visitors. Understanding that flip, plus the Carnival calendar, is most of what you need to time a trip well.
December to March: summer, beaches, and Carnival
This is Rio's hottest, most crowded, and most expensive stretch, with daytime temperatures regularly climbing into the mid-30s°C (mid-90s°F). It's peak beach season at Copacabana and Ipanema, and it's when Carnival happens — a five-day citywide celebration leading up to Ash Wednesday, with exact dates shifting each year since Carnival falls 40 days before Easter. Carnival 2027 runs February 5–10, with the main Sambadrome parades on February 7–9. Expect quick but heavy evening downpours even in summer, and book accommodation and any Sambadrome tickets months ahead if Carnival is the goal — prices and demand both spike hard around it.
April to May and October to November: the shoulder seasons
Temperatures ease into the 70s and low 80s°F (low-to-mid 20s°C) during the day, tourism tapers off from the summer peak, and prices come down accordingly. These months offer a genuinely comfortable balance — warm enough for the beach, cool enough for hiking Tijuca Forest or the trail up to Christ the Redeemer without the summer heat working against you.
June to September: winter, dry and mild
Rio's winter is mild by most standards — sunny days are common, rainfall drops significantly, and this is generally considered the best window for outdoor activities like hiking and paragliding. Nights and cloudy days can feel genuinely cool, so pack a light layer. This is also the best-value season, with lower prices across flights and hotels.
Practical notes
- Book Carnival accommodation and Sambadrome tickets as early as possible — prices climb fast and rooms sell out months in advance
- Pack for quick, heavy showers even in summer — an umbrella or light rain jacket is worth carrying year-round
- Many businesses close or run reduced hours from just before Christmas through early January, as locals take their own vacations
- Follow standard city-travel safety practices regardless of season — keep valuables minimal and be aware of surroundings, particularly during Carnival's dense crowds
The short version
Come for Carnival in early-to-mid February if that's the goal, and book far ahead. Otherwise, April–May and October–November hit the best balance of good weather and manageable prices, while June–September offers the best value overall for travelers happy to skip peak beach season.
